Position: Native Seed Production Farm Manager

Status: Full-time, Exempt
Location: Colusa, California
Reports to: General Manager

Position Description:

The Native Seed Production Farm Manager works with the General Manager and Directors of Operations and Science to collect and amplify native seeds to support multi-million dollar and multi-year river restoration projects across California. The Farm Manager will be responsible to farm native grasses and forbs, optimizing seed production and harvest, and work with River Partners to manage wild collections of desirable native seeds. This is a dedicated, hands-on position requiring both physical implementation of farming practices as well as overall management of farming operations. It includes the daily management of up to 3 employees and oversight of periodic farm labor crews. Some travel is required.

The Native Seed Production Farm Manager reports directly to the General Manager.

We give new life to river landscapes that protect communities from damaging floods, support diverse wildlife populations, and connect people to water. We design and deliver large river restoration projects across California, using bulldozers and tractors, tablets, and binoculars, all for the benefit of communities and natural resources. As the largest habitat restoration contractor in western North America, we are gearing up to head back to work as community-based, green economic stimulus.

As a project- focused company, we believe in the power of demonstrating environmental improvement through large-scale river restoration and empowering others through partnership and collaboration. As an entrepreneurial non-profit, we own and manage several subsidiary companies to vertically integrate our operations. River Partners’ seed company is one such wholly-owned subsidiary that is managed by a dedicated team of native seed production experts and River Partners talented administration and HR teams.

Essential functions and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Farm approximately 200 acres of prime agricultural soils in native grasses and forbs to produce seed of known genetic origin for use in habitat restoration projects
  • Monitor seed production yields and adaptively manage irrigation, weed control, and cultivation to optimize seed production for a variety of species and ecotypes
  • Oversee seed cleaning operation in collaboration with General Manager and Operations Manager
  • Oversee native seed storage including periodic sampling of seeds to be sent to seed laboratory for testing in collaboration with General Manager and Operations Manager
  • Oversee seed bagging, tagging, and mixing to assist with seed order fulfillment
  • Manage native plant demonstration garden
  • Collaborate with the General Manager to schedule production goals and budget needs; manage
  • inventory, product quality, vendors, and clients
  • Collaborate with River Partners Science team to identify and collect ecologically important
  • native grasses and forbs from wildland collection sites across California
  • Manage vendors and labor crews to make sure deliverables and safety goals are met
  • Initiate and direct changes to increase efficiency and meet objectives
  • Establish and coordinate productive partnerships with the agricultural community, conservation
  • organizations, and local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

  • BS in agriculture or related fields are encouraged to apply. Relevant work experience in production agriculture and native plant horticulture may substitute for college degree.
  • Three to ten years of appropriate work experience in production agriculture or native seed amplification.
  • Proven ability to delegate and coordinate a series of tasks on a tight deadline.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of farming practices and native plant materials cultivation.
  • Proven success in managing multiple simultaneous projects and deadlines while successfully
  • meeting project objectives within budget.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software.

  • Conduct other duties as requested.
